The Emerald Descent: A Portrait of Jasmine Novack
"When life gives you oceans."
There is a specific kind of silence found forty feet below the surface of the Pacific Northwest waters. It’s not an empty silence, but a heavy, rhythmic one—the swaying of kelp forests, the shifting of tides, and the muted filtration of light. This is where Jasmine Novack finds her breath. And for the last twenty years, I’ve had the front-row seat to watch her bring that world back to the surface.
"Miles did my headshots, and a number of photo shoots over the years and he always takes incredible photos. Super easy to work with, makes the whole experience less awkward (photo shoots can be tough sometimes) and he makes it fun and super comfortable. Takes feedback so well, and always checks in to make sure photos are looking how I want them to. I'll always go to him if I need shots of anything."

The Evolution of the Lens and the Brush
Our collaboration began two decades ago, but the Jasmine I see today is an artist who has truly found her depth. In the last five to six years, her craft has taken an incredible leap. She isn’t just painting "landscapes"; she is capturing the mood of a hidden ecosystem.
Through my lens, I’ve watched her blend color, contrast, and texture with a newfound intensity. She pushes her brush to its limits, mirroring the same fearlessness she shows when she’s out in the elements, observing the subtleties of light firsthand. Her work is a deepening connection—not just to the canvas, but to her own environment.
The Art of Resilience
Every artist faces a crossroads, but Jasmine’s was a matter of survival. When she discovered her traditional paint materials were making her sick, she was forced to choose between her passion and her health.
Watching her reinvent her practice wasn't just impressive; it was a masterclass in resilience. She didn't stop; she adapted. She found new ways to express the same soul, proving that her art was never about the chemicals—it was about the vision. That resilience is the invisible layer in every piece she creates. It’s why her recent feature as Seattle Refined’s Artist of the Week was so deserved; the world is finally seeing the layers we’ve known were there all along.
Immersed in the Layers
Our most recent creative concept, The Emerald Descent, was designed to capture this duality—the quiet power of the ocean and the practical execution of a working artist in her Seattle studio. In front of the camera, Jasmine moves with a natural comfort that only comes from someone who is used to being immersed in something greater than themselves.
Jas, I’ve been proud of you for twenty years. Watching the tide take you to this new chapter of your career is an honor. The real story isn't just on the surface of the canvas—it’s in the layers. It’s in the dive.
